Associate dentist compensation explained

Understand how associate dentist pay works in the US: percentage of collections vs. production, guaranteed base pay, benefits and contract terms to review.

Common pay structures

Most associate offers combine a few elements. Make sure you know which one applies to you.

  • Percentage of collections — paid on money actually received
  • Percentage of production — paid on work billed, sometimes adjusted
  • Daily or annual guaranteed base, often for an initial period
  • Hybrid: a guaranteed minimum or a percentage, whichever is higher

Benefits that change the real number

Two offers with similar percentages can differ a lot once benefits are included. Ask about malpractice insurance, CE allowance, license renewals, health insurance and paid time off.

Contract terms to review

Have an attorney who works with dental contracts review your agreement before signing. Pay particular attention to non-compete clauses, notice periods, lab fee deductions and how patients are handled if you leave.
