Associate dentist interview questions to prepare for — and ask

Prepare for associate dentist and general dentist interviews with common questions, working interview tips and the questions you should ask the practice owner.

Questions practices commonly ask

Expect questions about your clinical comfort, patient communication and long-term goals.

  • Which procedures are you confident performing, and which do you refer?
  • How do you explain a treatment plan to a hesitant patient?
  • Where do you see yourself in three to five years?
  • How do you work with hygienists and assistants?

Questions you should ask

The interview is your chance to assess the practice too.

  • How are new patients distributed between doctors?
  • What does a typical day look like in terms of patient volume?
  • How is compensation calculated, and is there a guaranteed base?
  • Is there a path to partnership or ownership?

Working interviews

Many practices invite candidates for a working interview. Clarify in advance whether it is paid, which procedures you will perform and who will be supervising, and confirm malpractice coverage applies.
